6 Warning Signs You’re Sleeping Too Much

Why too much sleep can also cause problems and how to recognize it.

A lot of people might be thinking: If only too much sleep were a problem in my life. But actually: If you sleep too much, you could endanger your health. A study from the University of Cambridge even showed that adults who sleep more than eight hours a night have a 46% higher risk of suffering a stroke. There is also a higher risk of developing diabetes, obesity, depression, Alzheimer’s disease or heart and vascular diseases.

Have you ever felt exhausted all day after a good night’s sleep? Do you have a headache when you get up, or a stiff neck? All of these could indicate that you are sleeping too much.

Here are 6 subtle but alarming signs you’re spending too much time in bed:

1: You feel down
Anyone who is going through a phase in which he or she needs a lot of sleep could be going through an emotionally challenging time. In the worst case, the reason could also be depression. Sure: Sleep and rest are important, but it is also a healthy rhythm. If you only lie in bed, you could activate negative feelings.

2: You have a headache when you wake up
If you have a headache after getting up, you may have overdone your rest. This could be due to the bad air in the bedroom, or the lack of food one experiences while sleeping. A good breakfast and a glass of water next to the bed can help.

3: fatigue
If you’re not rested even after ten hours of sleep, you might want to try less. And go outside instead, into the fresh air – for a walk or for a jog. This will probably activate the energy reserves for more than one more hour in bed.

Stiff neck, joint pain, backache: These are just a few of the side effects of too much sleep. A study even shows that too much sleep promotes inflammation in the body – especially in women.

5: You have trouble concentrating
Do you often forget what you were about to say? Is it harder to concentrate and focus? In fact, too much sleep is also linked to forgetfulness – cognitive decline.

6: You sleep badly
People who don’t sleep well tend to sleep longer or sleep too long. People who stop breathing during sleep ( sleep apnea ) also sleep longer – but are still not rested.
