From a medical point of view, clinical hyperacidity occurs when the kidneys and lungs are impaired. If the body’s own pH value (i.e. the hydrogen ion concentration of the body fluids) is not in this range, the transport of nutrients and hormone activity are impaired.

Which foods are “sour”?
The digestive process produces acidic carbon dioxide, which our lungs transport to the outside when we breathe out . Acids that have been supplied through our food, for example through proteins, are mainly discharged from the kidneys via the urine. So our body constantly carries out these regulatory mechanisms as soon as the pH value threatens to deviate.

However, the foods that our body has to struggle with cannot be determined by their taste. Citrus fruits with a sour taste, for example, are strongly alkaline-forming, while meat, eggs, cheese, rice and pasta are more acidic. Vegetables, fruit and potatoes are often referred to as alkaline builders and should be overcooked if they are slightly acidic. These 6 symptoms are signs of hyperacidity:

1. Chronic runny nose
In the case of hyperacidity, the body tries to get rid of excess acid through the mucous membranes – including through the mucous membranes in the nasal passages. So if your nose is running all the time, it can be a sign that your pH is out of norm, affecting the transport of nutrients.

2. Toothache
The oral cavity is already the control center for viruses and bacteria. However, when the pH in the mouth is lower than normal, microorganisms in the mouth feel more comfortable than usual, increasing the risk of tooth decay .

If the body can no longer regulate and break down the acid, acid is stored in the fatty tissue. In women, this is often on the chin, stomach or thighs. If the acid balance regulates itself again, these deposits will quickly disappear again. If the hyperacidity lasts longer, the waste products combine with the fat cells.

7. Heartburn
Excessive acid production from foods such as alcohol, desserts or coffee leads to acid build-up in the stomach. This can result in a so-called reflux (=backflow), which means that the contents of the stomach flow back into the esophagus, which means that the aggressive stomach acid can attack the mucous membrane of the esophagus and cause burning pain.
