7 tips for running in the cold

In principle you would like to exercise a bit in the fresh air – but you quickly lose interest when you open the weather app? we understand. However, it would certainly do you good to dare to top up your vitamin D levels and strengthen your immune system. You should only pay attention to a few points:

Hats are compulsory
When the temperatures drop to zero, it’s time to put on a hat, because the body releases 40 percent of its heat through the head. If it is very cold, gloves should also be part of the equipment.

Dress in layers
Since it is often difficult to estimate how thick you should dress, it is exceptionally true that more is better. However, the clothes should be put on in the layering principle so that after warming up, if it gets too hot, you can get rid of the superfluous clothes piece by piece. Then simply tie them around and the run continues.

keep warm
After running, it’s a good idea to put your training jacket back on immediately so you don’t get cold. If possible, a hot shower afterwards is ideal to loosen up the muscles.

When it rains or snows, you have to be quick
Wind and waterproof jackets protect against the cold and wet. As the initiator of the Austrian Women’s Run, Ilse Dippmann , likes to say, “there is no such thing as wrong weather when running, only wrong clothing” . And then it’s just a quick trip back inside.

The right shoe makes it
The summer running shoes are not necessarily ideal in mud and snow. If in doubt, it is worth buying a second pair (e.g. trail running shoes have a good profile). Anyone who takes part in competitions should have two pairs that fit well and are used regularly anyway, otherwise you would have to start a competition with new shoes if they broke shortly before.

Visible is safer
If you are out and about in the late afternoon or in bad weather, you should make sure that your clothing has reflectors so that you can be seen by other road users.
