Cough – whats now?

A scratchy throat, a feeling of coldness in the chest, a first rattle and the coughing begins. So that the uninvited guest does not become your constant companion during the cold season, we will show you how best to get rid of them.

But no matter how unloved the cough is as a companion , it actually only wants our best : Through this process, the body tries to get rid of foreign bodies or inflammations that have penetrated it – and in the case of colds , these are primarily pathogens.

In general, two phases of coughing can be identified during a cold:

1. Dry cough:
Barking and hard , this is how the cough often feels at the beginning of a cold. Then, when the bronchial mucous membranes become red, inflamed, swollen and begin to hurt. It is the initial phase when the immune system first attacks the common cold pathogen. One tries unsuccessfully to get the dry throat moist by frequent swallowing . Each cough irritates the mucous membranes again, which leads to renewed coughing attacks. So that the bronchial mucous membranes are not permanently damaged, you have to bridge the time as best as possible until mucus forms again.

2. Slimy Cough:
After about three days, the dry cough is over , but unfortunately not the cold: That means the next phase of the mucous cough is reached!

From now on, the bronchi secrete a secretion that helps the cilia to get rid of foreign particles. The color of the mucus indicates the cause of the cold: a clear color is often due to a viral infection, a yellow-green color to a bacterial infection.

But what can I do now against my unpleasant cough?

1. Drink a lot!
Drinking at least two liters a day loosens the tough mucus in the case of a persistent cough, which makes it easier to cough up. Teas are particularly recommended . Aniseed, fennel, primrose root, marshmallow root, buckhorn and liquorice root make it easier to expectorate, while thyme and ivy have both a cough-relieving and expectorant effect.

If you don’t like tea, buckhorn herb press juice is an alternative. You should take 10 ml of this three times a day undiluted or with some liquid before meals. Candies with manuka honey are practical for on the go. Commercially available honey relieves coughing, this special type of honey also has an antibacterial effect.

2. Indoor climate
Dry air irritates the bronchi, so pay attention to the humidity in living, working and sleeping areas. Be sure to keep your hands off cigarettes and stay away from smoky rooms!

3. Inhalieren
Inhale with chamomile or essential oils , which moisturizes the airways and relieves the discomfort of coughing.

4. Candy
It’s often said “keep your hands off sweets”. Not so if you suffer from a cough: keep reaching for cough-relieving and soothing sweets. The sugar and honey it contains stimulates mucus production and encourages expectoration.

5. Off to the doctor!
This advice only applies to the traditional cough. If the rattling and scratching lasts longer than two weeks – off to the doctor with you! This can rule out diseases such as allergies, asthma, cardiovascular diseases, pneumonia or tuberculosis.

If symptoms such as shortness of breath, high fever, severe pain and blood in the coughed-up mucus occur beforehand, it is better to go to the doctor immediately!
