Distinguishes a successful founder from an unsuccessful one?

Martin Rohla and Christoph Mayer coach founders from the idea to successful implementation. You know exactly what they need to be successful. At the FOUNDress workshop “How to get an Investment” they provide insights.

I have an idea for a business I want to start, but I have no idea how to go about it? What’s the first step? And what the five hundredth? What makes a successful founder? It is precisely these topics that around 50 young women between the ages of 20 and 51 dealt with as part of the “How to get an Investment” workshop on September 2nd and 3rd in Vienna. The workshop was organized by the FOUNDress initiative under the scientific direction of Prof. Dr. Karina Sopp .

FOUNDress is a program of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg that encourages young women to find out more about entrepreneurship, leads and organizes workshops and connects women with each other. In addition to the community and events, there is also a podcast.

At the opening talk on Thursday, September 2nd, the successful entrepreneurs, coaches and founders Martin Rohla and Christoph Mayer answered questions from the young (prospective) founders. In their company , Goodshares Consulting , they coach entrepreneurs at all start-up stages and recognize when they first meet whether this person has what it takes to be a successful founder.

decision after decision
A few points are important for this, as Martin Rohla explains: “Successful entrepreneurs are decisive. They like to make decisions. Not always the right ones, of course. But they make them.” Especially at the beginning of a start-up, there are daily decisions that have to be made. In his opinion, founders need to be willing to make the wrong decision from time to time so that they can then simply correct the course. According to him, any course correction is better than standing still.

Smart or unsmart founder?
This goes hand in hand with an understanding of what is currently important and what is not, and that this weighting is constantly changing over the course of development. Martin Rohla quotes a saying that his grandfather gave him to take with him: “A clever and an unwise person differs in that they can distinguish the essential from the unessential.” Unimportant decisions during the start-up process can be of great relevance two months or years later and vice versa. Remaining flexible here is an important quality, since things that were right yesterday can also be wrong today.

Everybody’s fool
Of course, this often offends people and you may not have time to explain decisions when you change direction. At this point, too, Martin Rohla quotes a family member, namely his mother: ” Everybody’s darling is everbody’s fool!” Trying to make everyone happy will leave you miserable. Being an entrepreneur also means being able to make difficult decisions and being willing to take risks.

He expects entrepreneurs to be passionate about their project and not just looking for a niche in the market that could currently be lucrative. That’s why he and Christoph Mayer also let founders appear at the first presentation without PowerPoint or fact sheets – it’s about the idea that they should present with enthusiasm. In the long term, however, every idea must be able to be represented in figures. Christoph Mayer explains: ” A vision is just smoke and mirrors if you can’t get it down on paper in figures.”
