Electromobility not only changes the scope of maintenance and repair work for garages – the entire service process is changing. With the existing battery in electric and hybrid cars, the scope of maintenance and repairs is significantly reduced due to fewer components required compared to the combustion engine.

“High-voltage certificate” qualification required for specialist workshops
Even to change tires on an electric vehicle or hybrid car, the mechanic needs appropriate qualifications in the form of advanced training. The current study by the “Quality is added value” initiative shows that only 59% of car workshops and tire dealers have such qualifications – and are therefore also allowed to change tires. In order to be successfully certified as a “specialist company for hybrid and electric vehicles”, it is necessary for at least one employee to be qualified to work on electric vehicles. The required qualification is associated with over one hundred teaching units and a few thousand euros at well-known educational institutes such as TUV, Dekra and well-known car manufacturers or suppliers.

Growing number of electric car workshops
With the increase in electric and hybrid cars, the number of qualified specialist workshops and vehicles available on the used car market will also increase in the long term. This enables many customers to look for a cost-effective alternative to their own authorized workshop. High cost savings in maintenance and service
A big advantage for all electric and hybrid car owners: The generally lower maintenance effort is also noticeable in the overall costs for maintenance and service. A study by the Institute for the Automotive Industry (IFA) from 2012 determined that the costs incurred for necessary maintenance and repairs are around 35 percent lower than for comparable vehicles with combustion engines. This can be easily explained by the fact that electric vehicles and hybrids require less maintenance due to their construction – the conventional components are constantly being further developed and therefore more durable.

Another tip: Clarify subsidies from municipalities and energy suppliers
In addition to the low maintenance and repair costs, you can also save on the purchase. Many municipalities and energy suppliers in Germany are promoting the switch to electromobility for private individuals and companies with grants. You can get more information about possible subsidies from your city administration and the local energy supplier.
