How do you know you’re grinding your teeth at night?

Teeth grinding is one of those annoying habits that can only be stopped if you consciously remind yourself (or someone else reminds you – here: relax your jaw!).

Crunching at night in particular is difficult to avoid. Crunching or relaxation splints or physiotherapy and reducing stress can help. However, many people do not even know that they grind their teeth at night, which can have serious consequences over time.

What happens if you don’t treat the crunch?
If the grinding is ignored, the teeth will be damaged. The extreme pressure of grinding attacks the tooth enamel and cracks can form. The teeth are likely to become more sensitive and painful over time, and in the worst case they can even break.

The jaw does not remain unscathed either: If the function of joints and muscles is impaired, experts speak of “craniomandibular dysfunction” (CMD). Those affected often report dizziness, and tinnitus can also be a possible consequence of jaw joint problems. After all, the entire spine can be affected, in particularly severe cases this can even lead to hip problems or a tilted pelvis.

How do you know if you grind your teeth at night?
If the teeth are already attacked, the dentist can detect signs of bruxism (this is what medicine calls teeth grinding). A classic sign are severely worn incisors, sensitive teeth or exposed tooth necks. But even if no tooth damage is visible, there are symptoms that indicate teeth grinding:

These include neck pain, headaches, a clicking jaw, a kind of soreness or pressure in the jaw, and not feeling well rested in the morning. It is not uncommon for the partner to be awakened by the loud crunching noises at night and to point this out to the person concerned.
