Ginger belongs to the ginger family and is believed to have originated in southern China. It is now grown in all tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, where it is also an important part of the kitchen. But ginger is also produced in parts of Africa, Brazil and Jamaica.

The ginger root is rich in vitamins, minerals such as potassium, calcium and iron. In addition, ginger contains beneficial essential oils , resin and also gingerol, which is responsible for the sharp taste.

Ginger has a stimulating effect on the formation of gastric juice, saliva and bile and counteracts nausea and feelings of fullness.

Ginger can also help with headaches. Take a soft cloth and dip it in warm water and ginger mixture. Then place the towel on your forehead for a few minutes and enjoy the beneficial effects.

In cosmetics, ginger is often used as a component of massage oil and in face creams, as it stimulates blood circulation, warms the body from the inside out and relieves tension and cramps.

The fresh ginger root can be recognized by its lemony and fresh smell. When you buy it, it should still look plump, because shriveled specimens are already drying out from the inside. In terms of taste, ginger is one of the hot spices. Especially in Asia, the fresh tuber is eaten raw – whether cut, grated or soaked in water.

Ginger not only warms you from the inside, it also helps with indigestion, nausea or a tendency to motion sickness. If the holiday trip is usually accompanied by discomfort, ginger tea, which is drunk one to two hours before departure, helps as well as with the other complaints.

In traditional Chinese medicine, ginger is also used as an external remedy to help with bruises, strains, insect bites, skin diseases or nail fungus.

However, if you have heartburn, gallstones or other inflammatory stomach conditions, you should avoid excessive consumption of ginger so as not to worsen the symptoms.

Ginger: The coffee alternative in the morning

In addition to ginger tea, the ginger shot has also developed into a trendy drink in recent years. The ginger ingredients can give you a boost in the morning like a cup of coffee and also offer a great-tasting alternative.

Put about 100g of ginger in the juice blender together with a pinch of turmeric , some orange juice and honey – the result will surprise you. Ideally enjoy cold. Of course, it can also be mixed with lemon, apple or carrot juice – depending on your taste!

1. Soak the tuber in warm water overnight (then it will germinate more easily).

2. Fill a flowerpot two-thirds full with high-nutrient soil.

3. Put the ginger root in the ground.

4. Cover finger-deep with soil or hummus and press down lightly.

5. Moisten with lukewarm water, for example with a spray bottle.

6. To create a tropical climate, cover with food wrap, but don’t smother.

7. Place in a bright, warm and draught-free place out of direct sunlight.

8. Moisturize daily.

9. Waiting. After a few weeks, the first shoot will appear.

10. Repot the plant and put it in the sunniest spot you can find in your home.
