Honey is a foodstuff made by honeybees that, along with salt, is the only edible product that has virtually no expiration date. Honey is a viscous, mostly solid, sometimes crystallized substance that tastes particularly sweet due to its high content of fructose and glucose.
This high sugar and relatively low water content inhibits the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms. The two main forms are blossom honey and honeydew honey, but within these two distinctions there are numerous types of honey with different tastes.
Honeydew honey contains more minerals than blossom honey and is usually obtained by centrifuging the comb inserts.
Most of the lighter types of honey have a mild flavor and well-known examples of this would be acacia honey, linden honey, or wildflower honey.
Darker types of honey are characterized by a strong, sometimes somewhat tart, distinctive taste. They include pure single-origin honeys such as forest honey, fir honey or silver fir honey. All three types of honey belong to the honeydew honey group.
Is honey healthy?
Is honey as unhealthy as sugar? Or superfood with health benefits? One thing is clear: Many myths about honey cannot be proven scientifically.
However, nutrients such as vitamins and minerals are very well contained and thus strengthen our immune system. Because of its “enveloping” property, honey is beneficial for sore throats . The honey wraps itself around the esophagus and protects inflamed areas.
Because of its high sugar content, high quality honey has a hydrating, smoothing and nourishing effect. It stimulates the regeneration of the epidermis, cell exchange is activated and the skin is invigorated. Nourishing honey moisturizes by storing water molecules in the skin’s hydrolipidic film. The skin becomes soft and radiant.
But it is also fixed: The teeth are not happy about honey – the viscous substance fuels tooth decay.
What is in honey?
The main components of honey are fructose, glucose and water. It also contains minerals (eg iron, copper, sulphur, potassium, silicon, manganese, magnesium, chlorine, calcium and zinc), vitamins, amino acids and enzymes. So it is not for nothing that it is called the energy dispenser.
Honey vs Sugar
In general, honey is a useful addition to enjoying table sugar, but a few things should be considered:
Pollen allergy sufferers can experience hypersensitivity reactions after consumption, since pollen is an important main component in almost every type of honey.
Diabetics should also be careful and cautious, as honey and sugar are almost identical in terms of sugar content.
Even for those who want to lose weight, honey is not necessarily an alternative, since it and table sugar have almost the same calorie content. Nevertheless, it is definitely healthier than sugar!
