How to choose a kid’s mountain bikeadmin
Driving off-trail, criss-crossing trails in the middle of nature and hurtling down slopes what a joy to ride a mountain bike! To indulge in this activity as a family in the safest possible conditions, you have to rely on the right mount. Here are some tips for choosing a good children’s bike.
What is a mountain bike?
A light but sturdy frame, large wheels, knobby tires, straight handlebars and a suspension system (single or double), these are the characteristics that distinguish a mountain bike from a hybrid or road bike.
A matter of size
The size of the child is the first criterion to consider when choosing a bike. It is this that will dictate the diameter of the wheels of the racing car. For example, 12-inch wheels will generally fit a child around three years old, while a 13-year-old should ride 24-inch wheels.
Brakes and Gears
While the smaller models have only one speed and have a coaster system (the child pedals backwards), the 20-inch bikes (for children from 6 to 8 years old ) operate with a system of several gears and manual brakes.
If, up to 7 years old, the child can ride very well with a rigid bike, it is at this age, according to his level of experience and the type of terrain on which he rides, that he will be able to benefit from a suspension system, especially practical for the descent and the jumps. A mountain bike can have single or double suspension. In the first case, the bike has a suspension fork at the front only, to which is added a shock absorber at the rear in the second case. A simple suspension is suitable for children from about 8 to 12 years old. Afterwards, especially those who aim to make it a fearless practice, the double suspension is in order.
Where to buy a mountain bike?
With growth at high speed, a child rides on average a year or two with the same bike before having to move to a larger model. This is why the second-hand market is full of bikes that are still in very good condition. Otherwise, specialized shops are preferable to supermarkets, because the experts who work there are able to offer advice and make the necessary adjustments for optimal driving, both in terms of safety and comfort.
