How to properly clean your home to reduce pathogens

Cold, flu and unfortunately also corona viruses are currently in high season and are spreading mainly indoors. Therefore, you should know how to properly clean your home. 5 tips for the next home cleaning:

At least since the outbreak of the corona pandemic, we have known how important hygiene measures are in everyday life. Especially in winter, when all kinds of viruses lead to infections, it is necessary to clean properly to reduce bacteria and viruses – especially indoors, where they have an easy time. Don’t worry, it’s not that complicated. Manuel Klamecker from the household products company Vorwerk has five simple tips ready.

1. Use conventional cleaning products
In recent months we have often heard how important and useful disinfectants are (you can read how to disinfect your hands properly here ) – but surface germs and dirt particles are most effectively removed with common household cleaners. Disinfectants do not dissolve dirt and therefore do not replace cleaning.

“However, they can be used as the crowning glory to offer additional protection against pathogens,” explains Manuel Klamecker. What you should not do without when cleaning: cleaning gloves. This not only protects your hands from pathogens, but also from irritation that can be caused by the cleaning agents.

2. Focus on frequently touched surfaces
Handles, knobs, work surfaces, sinks, faucets or smartphone displays – all places where we come into contact with our hands are real hotspots for germs, viruses and bacteria. Therefore, they should be cleaned regularly, especially during the cold season. Ideally several times a week. Of course, don’t forget the floor.

3. Change and clean textiles regularly
To give viruses no chance, you should change and clean your laundry at regular intervals. You should pay special attention to towels, bedding and any cloths you use to clean. In order for the bacteria to be properly killed, this laundry should be washed at at least 60°C and ideally without fabric softener, as this is more likely to ensure that bacteria remain in the laundry. “Anyone who wants to limit the spread of pathogens should also use a separate cleaning cloth for each cleaning process. Otherwise, germs and bacteria can multiply more quickly,” says Manuel.

4. Work from top to bottom
Another rule to keep in mind when cleaning: Always clean from top to bottom. That means: First clean furniture and objects that are upstairs in the room and then work your way down. In this way, objects and surfaces that have already been cleaned are not soiled again. Klamecker also advises: “In order not to stir up and spread the dirt, always wipe in one direction”. The following applies to floors: These should first be cleaned dry and then damp. Here, too, the technique is important: first clean the edges of the room and then wipe out of the room while moving backwards.

5. Air regularly
Fresh air is essential for our health. Especially in winter, when we spend a lot of time indoors, we often forget about it and don’t get enough fresh air. It is best to get used to airing regularly. This reduces the number of viruses in the air, increases the humidity in the room and ensures that dust is bound better and therefore settles less.
