Is carbonated water unhealthy?

We all know how important it is to drink enough. Water or unsweetened tea is best. We know that too. Some of us like to have a drink of carbonated water. That refreshes, if we’re honest, again differently and also has a slightly different taste. For example, what would a lemonade be without soda? Nevertheless, it is commonly said that carbonated water is unhealthy. What’s up with the rumour? We looked at this:

Carbonic acid changes the pH value
Fizzing in water occurs when carbon dioxide (CO2) combines with water (H2O). With the water we buy in the supermarket, this is pressed into the bottle, but theoretically it can also occur naturally. The carbonic acid changes the pH value of the water and makes it slightly acidic. While still water normally has a pH of around 5.3, sparkling water has a pH of around 7. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, just good to know.

Is carbon dioxide bad for your teeth?
Something people like to hear about sparkling water is that the fizz is bad for your teeth. This would attack the tooth enamel, making people more susceptible to tooth decay. The American Dental Association doesn’t see it that way and considers carbonated mineral water to be harmless. They cite a study in which experiments were conducted with teeth in still and carbonated water. According to the Dentists’ Association, there was no difference in the effect of the two types of water.

Does carbonated water make you fat?
This is also a rumor that is very vehement and is based on a study from 2017 that shows that carbon dioxide is supposed to stimulate the appetite. If a study says so, it has to be true. Well, not necessarily. Because this study was only tested on rats and 20 students and is therefore not very meaningful. To date, there is no further evidence that sparkling mineral water has any effect on weight.

Is sparkling water bad for your stomach?
Anyone who absorbs CO2, i.e. carbonic acid, must be aware that it has to be released again. Many people are probably familiar with the problem that you tend to burp after too much carbon dioxide. It’s uncomfortable, but not unhealthy. It can become a problem if you suffer from heartburn or have a sensitive stomach. When you belch, stomach acid can get into the esophagus and cause heartburn. It can also lead to bloating or digestive problems. So if you are prone to this or have problems, you should fall back on still or slightly carbonated water.
