Is my skin dry or dehydrated?

Dry and dehydrated are often used interchangeably when it comes to skincare, but they’re not really the same thing. In fact, any skin type, whether oily, combination, or dry skin, can be dehydrated. How to tell the difference and what you should know for your skin care routine.

What is dry skin?
Dry skin is a skin type that is genetically predisposed (but can also be promoted by age, medication, stress or environmental influences). The skin produces too little sebum, which is why it is important to supply the missing oils with the help of appropriate care products. Typical signs of dry skin are dead skin that is peeling off, a feeling of tightness, itching, redness and cracks or a rough feeling on the skin – but with the right care, all of this can be managed well. Dry skin is often a little thinner and can be accompanied by a slightly pale complexion. However, in contrast to oily skin, it tends to have finer pores and is less prone to blemishes than oily skin or combination skin.

What helps: If you have dry skin, it is best to use mild, gentle cleansing. Cleansing milk or oil is a good idea here. It is better to keep your hands off aggressive cleansers or mechanical peelings. A rich moisturizer provides your skin with sufficient nutrients – pay attention to ingredients such as urea, jojoba oil, hyaluronic acid or ceramides (special fats that help to strengthen the skin barrier).

And what is dehydrated skin?
As previously mentioned, dehydration can affect all skin types, from oily to dry. So it is a skin condition. The skin lacks water. This can have various causes – the most common are lack of fluid intake, caffeine consumption, alcohol, hormones, diet, smoking, sun, heat, dry heating air (especially now in winter), too hot water or the climate.

And yes, even oily skin can be dehydrated. This is expressed, for example, in the fact that it produces even more sebum to compensate for the lack of moisture.

You can recognize dehydrated skin, for example, by an unpleasant feeling of tension, scaling, an oily sheen or susceptibility to pimples.

What helps: In order to get dehydrated skin under control (in addition to adapting your lifestyle – i.e. drinking enough water, using sunscreen, etc.), products that supply your skin with moisture and bind it and strengthen the skin barrier can help. When it comes to ingredients, hyaluronic acid is your best friend because it absorbs moisture and holds it in the skin.
