Right tyres for your caravanadmin
Having your own caravan has one major advantage: you can start your holiday flexibly at any time. For the next carefree camping holiday, however, there are a few things to consider, such as the right tires. So that the car breakdown doesn’t spoil your holiday, here are a few tips for choosing the right tires for your caravan.
Check the caravan tyres regularly
As with car tires, the general condition of caravan tyres is a combination of several factors. Basically, you should pay attention to the tread depth of the tires. This is the legal requirement: If the minimum tread depth of 1.6 millimeters is reached, the tires must be changed. As a recommendation, we recommend replacing the tires for your caravan from as little as 4 millimeters in order to be safe on public roads.
The right tyre for the caravan
Camper tires are used for caravans and mobile homes. You can recognize these tires by the fact that the size is followed by a CP (camping) or C (commercial). With tires marked “CP” you can be sure that the tires are up to the special requirements for caravans and mobile homes. Just note that there is no legal regulation for assigning the CP identifier. It is therefore also not specified how the direct comparison to tires with the marking “C” turns out.
In most cases, all tyres with the CP marking have what is known as overload resistance, which ensures that the tire will handle possible overloading better than a C tyre. In addition, the stronger sidewalls mean that “CP” tires are far less prone to flat spots. As long as the format fits, every caravan owner is free to choose whether to mount a “C” or “CP” tire.
Check the air pressure after loading
The air pressure of the tires should always be monitored. That means: The caravan should be checked regularly for the optimum air pressure. You can recognize high air pressure by the fact that the middle of the tire is more worn. You can tell if the air pressure is too low if the tire walls are too smooth, the handling is spongy and the rolling resistance is increased. Also make sure that your caravan is not overloaded too much. Before you set off on your well-deserved vacation, you should introduce the last check of tire pressure as a fixed step in preparation.
The right time to change the tyres on the caravan
Irrespective of what the tires look like and whether they still have enough tread, experts recommend replacing caravan tires after five to six years, despite the lack of the legal maximum age.
This is ensured by the natural aging of the rubber compound, which influences the driving characteristics. Additional factors such as improper parking and external influences related to the weather, such as heat and UV radiation, can also lead to tire deformation. You can easily find out the exact production date if you are no longer sure. You can find the production date on the tire sidewall as an encrypted code in the form of a four-digit number (DOT number).
