Camembert, blue cheese, grapes and wine: sometimes nothing beats a hearty cheese platter with all the trimmings. (At least for everyone who is not yet lactose intolerant .) Unfortunately, cheese still suffers from its bad reputation. He is said to be unhealthy and too greasy for the heart. But is that true?

Not necessarily. As with so many foods, you can find healthy and unhealthy options. We’ll show you which types of cheese you should definitely grab – and which ones you should probably keep your hands off.

These cheeses are healthy

Cottage Cheese : The Cottage Cheese is a fantastic all-rounder. It is particularly easy to digest, strengthens soft bones and is low in fat. Cottage cheese is even said to be good for the nerves. The B vitamins take care of that.
Swiss cheese: Good news: Swiss cheese is also good for you. This is fermented (which also creates the holes in the cheese) and contains probiotic bacteria, which have health benefits for you by reducing inflammation in the body.
Quark : This cheese has multiple benefits for you. Cottage cheese is high in calcium, which is important for your bones. Quark also has several vitamins and minerals. The protein in the quark strengthens the muscles. And if you have a sunburn, applying quark has a cooling and anti-inflammatory effect.
Parmesan : Phew, all clear! Parmesan is also not on the red list. Parmigano not only tastes great, but also has a high nutrient density. These include calcium, vitamin D, iron, zinc and potassium. Parmesan is high in protein and low in cholesterol. So: get it in moderation!

You should keep your hands off these types of cheese

As you can see, the cheese, which is often defamed as unhealthy, has a lot to offer from calcium to vitamins. However, this does not apply to all types of cheese.

This also includes processed cheese, which tastes good on Hawaiian toast and in burgers, but has artificially added phosphates that are often hidden behind a long list of E numbers. Excessive consumption increases the risk of stroke and heart attack, for example. In addition, the skin ages faster. You’re always better off with fresh cheeses.

“We know exactly that skin aging and vascular aging are increasing and we know the harmful effects of artificially added phosphate on bone health,” warns nutritionist Matthias Riedl in an interview with SWR .

You should also avoid low-fat cheeses. This may sound like a contradiction, but it can be explained logically: unhealthy additives replace the missing fat. You should also avoid sweetened cream cheese if possible.
